Position Summary: Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine & Science welcome applications for a full-time Controller. Under the direction of the Executive Vice President of Finance & Administration/Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for administrative and technical leadership of the accounting and financial reporting functions of the University. This position oversees the organization’s accounting practices and financial reporting including preparation and review of all accounting records and financial reports. The Controller oversees the daily operations of the Business Office including general accounting, data control, contracts and grants accounting, accounts payable, plant fund accounting and accounts receivable. Prioritize work assignments and special projects, review and evaluate performance, monitor operational procedures, and implement modifications to improve efficiencies. Oversee the preparation of financial statements ensuring they meet local and federal reporting requirements, standards, and schedules. Manage, monitor and approve expenditures and adjustments, and oversee financial controls.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities: • Oversee the functions of accounts payable, general ledger, accounts receivable, internal controls, plant fund accounting. • Manage all areas of the accounting department, ensuring legal and audit requirements are met. • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate the accounting department staff. • Responsible for the preparation of both internal and external financial statements. • Responsible for remaining current with the latest accounting pronouncements and concepts, applying those concepts to University financial statements as well as the reporting and registration requirements of the state of Illinois and federal government. • Perform significant review of financial statements assuring the proper allocation of revenues and expenses. • Responsible for the management of accounts payable, cash management and accounting for investment transactions. • Responsible for the development and maintenance of an appropriate system of internal control over financial activities. • Coordinate the year-end annual financial audit and IRS 990, including the preparation of work papers. • Contribute to the overall success of the University by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Required Education & Experience: • Bachelor's degree in Accounting. • Licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA). • Minimum of eight (8) years of financial accounting and budgeting experience. • Must have five (5) years of management and supervisory experience that includes planning and organizing work, setting goals and objectives, day-to-day employee management, assigning tasks, providing guidance and training, monitoring performance, conflict management, automating processes, hiring, disciplinary actions, and/or termination. • Must achieve a background check clearance.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: • Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of non-profit accounting, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and budgetary administration and controls. • Considerable knowledge of ERP systems and applications. • Strong organizational, analytical, critical thinking, and problem solving skills. • Strong management skills. • Strong verbal and written communication skills to communicate key and complex financial concepts. • Significant and demonstrated skill closing financial books, conducting independent audits, and resolving audit findings. • Proficient in Microsoft Office with emphasis on Excel and Access. • Ability to think and plan strategically • Ability to manage a complex accounting operation. • Ability to and meet mandated deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications: • Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or Masters in Business Administration (MBA). • Experience in Non-Profit, Higher Education or Healthcare Industries. • Experience in Datatel Colleague GL systems.
