Di Pesa & Company, CPAs has been retained by Duxbury Bay Maritime School, Inc.(DBMS) to conduct a search for a part-time Controller.
DBMS is a 501(c)(3) community nonprofit founded in 1997 that provides programming and events to over 10,000 people per year. The mission of DBMS is to connect people of all ages, abilities, and means to Duxbury Bay through educational and recreational programs that stimulate individual growth and an enduring love and appreciation of the sea.
Controller - Duxbury Bay Maritime School, Inc. (“DBMS”)
DBMS is seeking an experienced, hands-on, part-time Controller to manage the organization’s financial operations, including both the development and delivery of day-to-day accounting, reporting, and compliance processes. Responsibilities will include financial management of assets, registrations, fundraising and events, compliance with Federal/State regulations, and ensuring that audits and tax returns are accurately completed in a timely manner. Supervision of DBMS’ part-time bookkeeper, senior staff decision making support and insightful reporting will help integrate this critical position into our rapidly expanding organization.
Required Skills and Knowledge:
The Controller position requires excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, communication, organizational and computer skills, as well as the ability to exercise professional discretion, independent judgment, and business acumen. The Controller should possess a mastery of QuickBooks Online, excellent Excel skills, and be adaptable to and able to identify the need for change. Without exception, the Controller position requires a proven track record of trustworthiness, personal accountability, and exceptional ethics.
5+ years of overall combined accounting and finance experience
Prior experience working as a non-profit Financial controller strongly preferred
Advanced degree in Accounting
CPA or CMA preferred
Thorough knowledge of accounting principles and procedures
Experience with general ledger functions and the monthly close process
Excellent accounting software user and administration skills
Manage all accounting operations including registrations, payroll, AR, AP, GL, donation, fixed asset, investment and inventory accounting
Manage month and year-end close processes and the annual budget
Collate and analyze mission-centric performance metrics from registrations, development and rental activities
Prepare and publish timely monthly operational and financial reports
Investigate and report on material financial variances
Coordinate the preparation of regulatory reporting
Research technical accounting issues for compliance
Ensure quality control over financial transactions and financial reporting
Coordinate the provision of information to external auditors
Manage and comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings
Develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
Identification and management of financial risks
Additional controller duties as necessary
The controller will report to the Executive Director and will work directly with senior staff and members of the board. It is essential the controller fully embraces the mission of DBMS.This position is part-time and offers a great deal of flexibility, with hourly work-load varying both monthly and seasonally. It is estimated that for the first year a 10hr average weekly commitment will be required, but this may vary widely based both on the successful candidate’s level of expertise and length of their learning curve.
