Purpose of Position
Christopher Newport University’s Luter School of Business is expanding its faculty, increasing its programs, and reviewing curricula in light of significant changes in the world of business and continuing developments in accounting and finance education. To lead this initiative, the Department of Accounting and Finance in the Luter School of Business invites applications for the position of Department Chair, effective August, 2019. We are seeking an accomplished scholar with a history of innovative pedagogy and contributions to accounting practice who will serve as a mentor and motivator to professors and students alike. This individual will take an active role in shaping the future of the department through leadership and collaboration, knowledge of the current practices, trends and opportunities in the profession, and engagement with the business community.
The successful candidate will present a distinguished record of teaching, scholarship and service that warrants an appointment with tenure. Christopher Newport University is primarily an undergraduate institution that focuses heavily on student-faculty interaction, small classes, and student service. The ideal candidate for this position will embrace this student centered environment and present a scholarly agenda that includes opportunities for students to participate in his or her research. Familiarity and understanding of current technological developments and applications in the accounting field coupled with strong connections to the profession are desired. Demonstrated experience in leadership and administration is required, as is a record of scholarship in the discipline, excellent oral and written communication skills, and strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of data analytics, systems and cyber security, and the CPA designation. The nominal teaching load is 2-2. The Ph.D. in accounting or closely related field is required at time of application.
The Luter School of Business at Christopher Newport University is ranked 93rd among undergraduate business programs by Bloomburg Business Week and 53rd by Poets & Quants. It is composed of 22 faculty and offers four majors (Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing). The Luter School’s AACSB-accredited business program requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 for entry, and attracts some of the University’s best students.
