Reporting to the Controller you will develop strategic, operational and tactical plans in response to NM’s short and long-range tax objectives including tax planning activities.
In addition, you will have the opportunity to do the following:
Work with Government Relations (tax advocacy) and Law (tax law), responsible for developing NM’s policy positions on various tax proposals. Will participate -- in coordination with Government Relations and Law -- in representing the company at appropriate industry, regulatory and governmental forums. Position will have significant accountabilities to the VP-Government Relations.
Responsible for analyzing the financial impact of legislative and regulatory tax proposals, communicating the impact to senior leadership and other stakeholder groups, and suggesting alternatives so senior leadership can more effectively understand, anticipate and influence potential outcomes to NM.
Responsible for communicating tax matters (compliance, audit, planning, etc.) to senior leadership and the Audit Committee, as appropriate.
Ensure appropriate tax compliance and reporting is implemented to include: (1) timely submission of required filings and (2) ensuring that the appropriate level of documentation is crafted and maintained to support analyses performed, decisions made and conclusions reached to follow appropriate regulatory standards.
Responsible for leading all aspects of the IRS audit including defending tax positions taken by NM and negotiating settlements with the IRS in to minimize overall tax burden.
Responsible for oversight of the management of the division ensuring optimum efficiency and quality assurance to optimize use of resources and minimize errors and inadvertent omissions.
Represent NM during tax examinations initiated by various jurisdictions.
Overall leadership of tax division personnel including responsibility for engagement and development.
Collaborate other Departments, including but not limited to Law and Actuarial, to maintain an organizational-wide team effort in effectively handle the overall tax burden of the organization that are within acceptable risk tolerances.
Collaborate with division leaders as a key leader of the Controllers Department in order to effectively lead department resources as a cohesive unit.
Bring Your Best! What this role needs:
You have a master’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Tax with CPA or Law degree with tax focus.
You have a minimum 15 years of relevant tax experience.
You have a minimum 10 years of insurance company tax knowledge and statutory accounting is also required.
You possess significant experience handling IRS audits of a multi-corporate organization with an ability to articulate the company’s tax positions and to favorably negotiate their ultimate settlement.
Strong communication, presentation and management skills are required.
You have the ability to work closely with senior leadership and with other departments in NM.
Working knowledge of: Merger & Acquisition tax laws.
Working knowledge of general actuarial concepts as they pertain to tax reserves
Working knowledge of investment product taxation
