The Director of Environment, Health and Safety reports to the University Risk Manager and provides leadership and direction for campus-wide environmental, health and safety programs. The Director oversees application and implementation of federal, state, and local regulations concerning health and safety, hazardous materials and environmental protection. This position supervises and establishes priorities for the Environmental Health and Safety staff responsible for implementing applicable regulatory programs, and is responsible for managing the department budget.
Minimum Eight years of experience developing and implementing comprehensive environmental health and safety programs.
Three years of supervisory experience.
A Bachelor’s degree with primary focus in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Physics, Occupational Health, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education, experience and/or professional certification.
Successful completion of a background check.
Possession of a valid state-issued driver’s license.
Preferred Master’s degree or graduate work in Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Science, Physics, Occupational Health, or a related field.
Effective oral and written communication skills sufficient to convey essential health and safety requirements, policies and guidance to members of the University community at all levels.
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with the University’s diverse community, regulatory agency representatives and key stakeholders across campus.
Professional experience working as a member of a comprehensive environmental health and safety department, preferably in a higher education setting.
Certified Safety Professional, Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager or other relevant certification preferred.
